How to tell if the glasses are the right size?
When the time comes to buy a new pair of sunglasses there are some recurring questions that need to be answered quickly and well. Also because – it is appropriate to say – the eye always wants its part and it is necessary to avoid wearing too particular accessories, oversized or extra small glasses that can highlight a disproportion. The choice of a new pair of glasses is mainly linked to aesthetic needs, so in most cases it is the frame that makes the difference. Proceeding correctly with the choice of this absolute accessory is important, which is why it will be useful to give some guidance on how to understand if the glasses are the right size.
Establishing the most congenial eyewear size for your personal physiognomy may be less complicated if you choose to take as a reference point an old pair of glasses with which you have found yourself particularly well. Obviously, also based on what are the diktats of fashion, deciding to experiment can be an equally good path to follow, always taking adequate account of the measures.
The rules for reading the codes found on the mount
On the frame of the glasses there are always codes that it is important to know how to read and that offer very useful information to facilitate choices (small variations may still be present from one brand to another). The information on the size of glasses is usually located on the inside of the left temple: the series consists of a few numbers in sequence.
The first indicates the width of the lens, i.e. the horizontal diameter at the point of greatest width. It is expressed in millimeters and, in optometric language, it is called ‘caliber‘. The second digit indicates how wide the bridge is, i.e. the part of the glasses that is above the nose and connects the two halves of the face (the range usually remains between 14 and 24 millimeters). The other number that we still find is the one relating to the temple: it is the final part of the glasses, the one that keeps them anchored to the face.
Size S, M or L: Eyewear size is easy
To avoid buying large glasses that are disproportionate to the shape of the face, or not to find yourself wearing small glasses that are then narrow and uncomfortable, the best thing to do will be to take into account these indications just seen but also others. You can also get glasses that are the right size using a ruler or a credit card: let’s see how.
In fact, it is possible to say, in case you proceed with the ruler, that a size S is the one whose lens measures approximately 45-46 centimeters, while you will have an M if the lens measures about 50-52 centimeters in width and finally an L if the centimeters should be approximately 55-56. The right size glasses can also be found, as mentioned, with the help of the ATM: the measurement relating to the height of the latter corresponds more or less to the width of normal spectacle lenses. Place the paper on the bridge of the nose and look sideways:
- if the tile goes beyond the edge of the eye, you will have a size S;
- if the card arrives exactly flush with the eye, you will have an M;
- if the tile stops before the edge of the eye, you will have an L.
