Facebook’s augmented reality glasses
The topic of augmented reality glasses has been coming up for a few years now. After the failed attempt of Google Glasses, now it is the turn of Facebook which, in partnership with an important brand in the eyewear sector, is launching the Orion project, to create special glasses that could replace the smartphone within five years.
What does augmented reality mean?
Looking at the reality that surrounds us through smart glasses allows you to obtain additional information, displayed directly on the lenses, on everything you look at and that happens around you. This is why reality is augmented, i.e. enriched on a sensory level with additional data, otherwise not perceptible with the five senses of man.
Thanks to this type of lens, it is possible, for example , to view messages, emails and chats from various social profiles but not only. It is also possible to take photos and videos as well as manage practically all the features that we currently have available on the smartphone, even with voice commands.
To give an example, also quite curious, if you forget the name of the person in front of you, augmented reality glasses allow you to view the information, thus avoiding unpleasant embarrassment.
The only limit so far remains the design. In fact, considering the flop from this point of view of Google Glasses, now we expect that the new glasses to be launched on the market will be decidedly less bulky and no longer similar to funny contraptions to put on the head.
In the project of the CEO of Facebook there would also be Live Maps or 3D maps of the world, always under one’s eyes, to be viewed at any time and on which it would also be possible to project a holographic avatar.
Specifically, Facebook’s new augmented reality glasses, likely to be released in 2023, will also play the role of a personal assistant. A real reminder for the day’s appointments, with the possibility of making calls and video calls and support not only in terms of entertainment but also information.
What is missing from the video presentation of the new headset that Zuckerberg showed during the Oculus Connect 6 developer conference, in San Jose, California is an image of the new glasses. No one in the video wears them, perhaps so as not to leak anything to the competition yet. Or it’s likely that the design isn’t finalized yet, although Facebook’s head of virtual reality, Bosworth, said there are already some prototypes.
Augmented reality glasses: a preview within two years
According to the previews provided by The Information, it would seem that within two years a preview of what will then be Orion in full functionality will arrive. It would be an App called Stella, or augmented reality glasses connected to the smartphone capable of directly transmitting everything you are looking at through the lenses and consequently also what you are doing (or is happening around us). This extraordinary novelty also leads, of course, to a new debate on privacy.
