Pinhole glasses: what they are and what they are used for

Taking care of the eyes, starting from a young age, is important. In fact, they represent our daily and bright window on the world. The passage of time inevitably leads people to experience changes in relation to their bodies: sight – one of the five senses – is not immune to the consequences of aging. It is possible to indicate a first obstacle around the age of 40, even for those who have not had any pathology or defect in refraction up to that moment: concentrating on objects, especially those closest to them, begins to become more difficult (we speak of presbyopia). With the onset of old age, there are many other pathologies that can occur. Prevention and maintenance of a healthy and balanced lifestyle are essential for the well-being of the eyes.

Eye gymnastics: the story of a revolutionary discovery

Among the most interesting visual aid tools for carrying out passive eye gymnastics , we must undoubtedly point out pinhole glasses, which allow natural visual rehabilitation. Unlike what happens with the ‘normal’ eyeglasses we are used to wearing, pinhole glasses have very special lenses. They have black screens, on which very small holes are made. Their distribution on the available surface, as well as their size, are perfected following a ‘honeycomb’ pattern. The history of these corrective glasses has its roots far back in time, in fact we have to go back to the ninth century to find the first trace of the principle of the ‘pinhole’. Later, we are in the Middle Ages, Leonardo Da Vinci was also a protagonist in this area: he was the first to compare the functioning of the human eye to that of the pinhole. And, finally, in the middle of the last century came the intuition of an American doctor – William Bates – in search of an alternative approach for the rehabilitation of vision. The pinhole was combined with glasses, resorting to the use of perforated black screens instead of the ‘classic’ graduated lenses.

How vision correction glasses work

Pinhole glasses are a special eyesight glasses that can be used safely even by children under ten years of age. It helps to correct certain incorrect habits, often leading to unexpected results. It is an instrument for eye gymnastics that looks at movement itself as a pure source of well-being. Of course, it must be used consistently and approached gradually. Start by wearing corrective glasses for a quarter of an hour a day, then increase the time while you gain confidence. Never force your eyes, on the contrary, you must favor the relaxation of the eye which – in this way – can work without tension and in a precise way. Among the benefits that pinhole glasses offer to achieve are:

  • greater vitality of the eye muscles;
  • reduced effort to focus on objects;
  • fewer migraines and feelings of fatigue related to eye strain;
  • reduced dryness;
  • improvement of disorders such as presbyopia, astigmatism and hyperopia.

There is also often talk of ‘perforated glasses’, with reference to the particular screens present instead of lenses. They offer to help relaxation and stimulate the movement of the extraocular muscles: greater sharpness and depth of field are perceived.
