Rules for those who spend the day in front of the PC
It is called CVS Computer Eye Strain syndrome and refers to the discomfort to the eyes caused by prolonged spending time in front of the computer. Professions related to the world of the web have multiplied and today there are many people who have to spend the day in front of the PC for work. Vision prevention is essential so as not to compromise our precious eyes more or less seriously.
5 rules for vision prevention for computer workers
Several studies show that at least 50% of professionals who work mainly on the PC suffer from eye strain. The more hours you spend in front of the computer, the more this figure increases, up to 90%. This is because screens emit so-called blue light, which over time can cause:
- Tired eyes
- Redness
- Spasms
- Burning
- Insomnia
- Asthenopia
- Maculopathy
- Headache
But that’s not all: fatigued eyesight during the day also reduces productivity, increasing the percentage of error and inducing physical fatigue in the person.
What can be done to prevent PC vision and improve these conditions? First of all, the advice is to undergo an eye examination periodically to keep the disorders under control. It is also possible to adopt some small but important precautions in everyday life.
Optimize your workplace
Ergonomics and the correct position of the desk and chair in this case are essential to avoid being too close to the screen and therefore straining the eyes. The optimal distance between the eyes and the monitor is about 20-24 cm and the screen must be 15-20 ° lower than the gaze. If you have paper documents to check often, it is good to place them next to the monitor and not in front, to avoid constantly raising and lowering your neck.
Control the lighting
Light is a crucial factor when it comes to vision prevention. For this reason, it is a good idea to place the computer to the side of a window or immediately below, to prevent shadow areas from being created on the keyboard. It is also essential to have a halogen lamp on the desk to illuminate the PC or alternatively a floor lamp, even in the presence of an illuminated room.
Wearing glasses
For those who habitually wear contact lenses, it is strongly recommended to use glasses on the PC. The risk otherwise is dry eyes, which increases the possibility of lens breakage or conjunctivitis in the eyes, reaching, in the most serious cases, up to corneal abrasion.
Moisten the eyes
It has been proven that a computer display causes dryness in the eye as it happens to blink less frequently than normal. For this reason, it is a good idea to update monitor displays using liquid crystal displays, insert anti-glare and use eye drops every day to moisten the surface of the eye.
Take breaks
For the purpose of vision prevention, every hour it is good to take a break, even if for a couple of minutes, to take your eyes off the screen and help the eye to “oxygenate”. Ideally, you should look as far as possible, for example through a window or balcony.
