AutoColor Dark, the new photochromic lens by Roman Optica
Photochromic lenses are ophthalmic lenses that automatically adapt to changes in sunlight. These lenses contain a special photosensitive technology that reacts to ultraviolet (UV) light and darkens or lightens in response to sun exposure.
With photochromic lenses it is as if you had two pairs of glasses in a single frame: when it is cloudy or we are in a closed environment, the lenses are clear and completely identical to normal lenses, when it is sunny and we are outdoors, the lenses darken quickly turning into lenses for prescription sunglasses.
What is an Autocolor photochromic lens?
An Autocolor photochromic lens is an excellent solution that allows you to customize your style and look thanks to many fashion colors such as orange, gray, blue, yellow, pink, green and brown and able to absorb variables ranging from 5% to 70%.
One of the most interesting features of an Autocolor photochromic lens is the extreme customization: the lens can not only change the color tone depending on the internal and external light, but, during construction, it is possible to customize it by choosing a particular color, even shaded.
Autocolor photochromic lenses are designed to meet the needs of users of all ages and with all vision problems, by means of progressive, monofocal, bifocal, anti-fatigue and degressive lenses.

Then there are the Autocolor dark lenses in 6 colors which are autochromatic lenses with darker intensities, with UV 410 protection and very resistant.
The new Photochromic lens produced with Spin Coat Advanced (SCA) technology.
This innovative production process is based on in-depth studies and research over the years, thanks to the use of fully automated robotics and an advanced system. This allows you to obtain a final product with optimized performance in terms of speed, color intensity and high protection against ultraviolet rays (420 nm).
In addition, the use of the MR-8 monomer with high UV protection 420 increases the mechanical resistance of the lens and guarantees greater durability.
The main goal of the Autocolor DARK lens, ideal for everyday wear, is to offer a trendy aesthetic experience, a more sensitive color transition and total protection.
They are the solution for every situation, thanks to the addition of ZEROLUX achromatic anti-reflective and OILUX oleophobic coatings, which offer additional benefits, maintaining a clear vision over time.
What are the advantages of Autocolor photochromic lenses?
Let’s go back to talking about the many advantages that photochromic lenses offer during the summer and in other Variable light conditions:
- UV protection. Autocolor photochromic lenses offer protection from harmful UV rays. When exposed to sunlight, the lenses darken to reduce the absorption of harmful UV light. The brighter the light, the darker they become. This helps protect the eyes from the harmful effects of UV rays, including retinal damage and risks of developing cataracts or macular degeneration.
- Comfort and practicality. Autocolor photochromic lenses automatically adapt to the surrounding light conditions. They darken when outdoors in bright sunlight and lighten when moving indoors or in less intense light. This automatic adaptation allows you to have a clear and comfortable view without having to change glasses every time you enter or leave an enclosed environment.
- Versatility. Thanks to Autocolor photochromic lenses, there is no longer the need to change glasses when moving between indoor and outdoor environments. They can be used in different situations, both during the summer and in other seasons, adapting to different light conditions.
- Visual comfort. Autocolor lenses gradually adapt to changes in light, ensuring a smooth and natural transition. This helps to reduce glare and visual fatigue, allowing for more comfortable viewing in different light conditions.
- Protection from atmospheric agents. During the summer , Autocolor photochromic lenses can offer additional protection from atmospheric agents such as wind, dust and insects.
Autocolor photochromic lenses represent, therefore, one of the most effective solutions to protect the eyes during the summer and in general when you have to frequently switch from outdoors to indoor environments and vice versa.
Photochromic lenses: who are they suitable for?
Photochromic lenses are suitable for all people who:
- play sports or work in bright light and therefore need adequate protection from the sun’s harmful rays;
- they use prescription glasses and need effective shielding from the sun’s rays;
- they cannot stand contact lenses and prefer to wear prescription glasses that give effective protection from UV rays;
- they frequently switch from outdoor to indoor environments and do not want to constantly switch between prescription glasses and sunglasses.
Useful tips for cleaning photochromic lenses
Photochromic lenses must be treated with care, in order to keep their darkening power intact over time and avoid the appearance of stains or scratches.
To best clean this type of lens, simply use warm water and mild soap in order to remove oily residues or classic handprints.
To dry the lenses , it is advisable to use a microfiber cloth and to avoid drying them using paper, tissues, napkins or clothing. Only microfiber, in fact, has a smooth and soft surface that avoids involuntary micro-scratches on the lenses.
