Rest glasses: how to choose them correctly
Visual fatigue affects a large segment of the population, consisting of workers, men, women, children and students. Screens and displays emit a blue light that can cause problems with the visual system, such as heaviness of the eyelid or irritation of the retina. Eyewear manufacturers have recognized this problem by creating glasses that allow you to avoid these annoying discomforts. These are the rest glasses, which are also essential for dealing with long hours spent driving the car or in school books.
These glasses allow us to avoid headaches, dizziness and eye pain, which is why they are necessary when you have to face all those activities that engage the eyes for many hours, proving to be particularly effective in avoiding eye strain.
The main features of rest glasses
Rest glasses should not be used frequently but only during work and when you notice that your eyes are tired due to the intense brightness of the screen or when you are busy reading or driving the car.
These glasses are intended to cool down the eyes and often also have small corrections for those suffering from astigmatism or hyperopia.
The best rest glasses are those that mount anti-reflective lenses, which prove to be particularly effective in reducing the discomfort caused by the intense brightness of PC displays and monitors.
Rest glasses are absolutely suitable tools both to counteract eye fatigue when we are driving a car, and to counteract those ailments that we feel when we are in front of electronic screens or when we have difficulty reading.
How to choose rest glasses
The following elements should be taken into account when choosing rest glasses :
- frame, which can be made in different materials, styles and colors;
- presence or absence of anti-reflective coating;
- use or not of prescription lenses;
- presence of the blue light filter in reading glasses.
The trendy frames are those made of plastic, such as cellulose acetate or cellulose acetate propionate. They are cheap but above all light and robust frames.
The anti-reflective coating is important when choosing a pair of rest glasses for driving or working in front of the computer. This coating counteracts the reflection of sunlight and glare when driving, but also the reflection of artificial light when you spend many hours at the computer.
When you already wear prescription glasses with prescription lenses, you cannot use normal glasses with a blue light filter. In this case, you can choose a pair of lenses with a blue light filter to be applied with a special clip on the prescription glasses.
If you want a pair of rest glasses both for reading and for working on the computer, then you must opt for those models that offer different diopter corrections, which usually range from +0.50 to +6.00 and at the same time also the blue light filter to ensure adequate protection when you are in front of the monitor.
Rest glasses are not intended to correct a visual defect such as farsightedness or nearsightedness. They do not improve vision by optimizing the wearer’s visual acuity.
The lenses of these glasses can correct an average of +0.6 to 0.75 diopters.
Before choosing a pair of rest glasses , it is therefore advisable to do a thorough eye check to assess the visual defect.
