Degressive lenses: the main features

Degressive lenses, also known as office lenses, fall into the category of occupational lenses designed specifically for work environments.

This type of lens has a corrective power for reading, which is lightened as you move towards the upper area of the lens.

Office lenses are an optimal solution for those who have difficulty seeing near and far. Thanks to their special technology, these lenses are able to correct vision at different distances, ensuring clear and comfortable vision.

Let’s find out together the characteristics of degressive lenses and their main applications.

What are the characteristics of degressive lenses?

Office lenses belong to the category of multifocal lenses, i.e. they contain numerous focus points. They are constructed so that the corrective powers allow the eye to be able to focus at intermediate and close distances.

These lenses have a large area at the bottom of the lens with the power needed for reading, which changes gently and gradually as you move towards the top of the lens.

Usually in the upper area of the lens there is the dioptric power suitable for focusing on objects placed at a maximum distance of about three meters. In the lower area, the power increases, allowing you to focus on monitors and objects located at different distances, up to the power for close reading.

The maximum distance is a construction parameter that must be agreed with your trusted optician depending on the models available and your employment needs.

What are the advantages of degressive lenses?

Glasses with office lenses cannot be used as normal progressive glasses.

In fact, the vision from a distance is blurred and this puts not only your safety but also that of others at risk.

Progressive lenses have wide fields of vision for distance and near vision, while intermediate fields of vision are narrower. As a result, viewing the computer screen is not easy: you may only see the central area and above all you should tilt your head slightly backwards to find the right focus.

All these problems are eliminated by PC glasses with office lenses because the upper area of the lens, the one with the widest field of vision, is optimized for sharp vision at intermediate distances. You will be able to see the monitor with much less distortion and blur. You will be allowed to adopt a comfortable and healthy posture.

With office lenses , you no longer have to make unnatural head movements to be able to focus on the letters on your monitor. You won’t even have to interrupt work to massage your cervical spine or find yourself having to manage excessive eye strain once the day is over.

Who are office lenses suitable for?

Degressive lenses, being occupational lenses, can be used in a very specific area.

By allowing clear vision of intermediate and nearby areas, office lenses are ideal for VDU operators who need to frequently shift their gaze from the computer monitor to documents to be read. This is why this type of lens is the first choice for presbyopic people who want computer glasses.

Anyone who spends most of their working day in confined spaces, such as a room, and whose tasks do not require clear vision of distant distances but only a quick transition between intermediate and near distances, can also benefit from these lenses.

Teachers, secretaries and office employees are the main figures for whom office lenses have been designed, but other professionals will also find their use convenient. Dentists and general practitioners are examples of this.

Degressive lenses for presbyopia: what advantages do they offer?

In order to be able to focus on different distances, the use of single vision glasses is not recommended. On the contrary, the use of degressive lenses is strongly recommended: a real evolution of progressive lenses, as they are designed for the office environment and, therefore, highly performing.

These lenses offer the following benefits:

  • Excellent near and intermediate vision and ergonomic posture. Degressive lenses are dedicated to near vision, making them ideal for those who work in the office or study at school. They are optimized exactly for this and guarantee significantly better results than all the others, not only visually, but also from an ergonomic point of view, ensuring a correct posture of the neck and back. Progressive glasses in front of the computer force you to an unnatural posture, called “tortoiseshell neck position”. A problem that does not occur with office (degressive) lenses.

  • Good anti-reflective and anti-fouling properties. An important aspect of degressive lenses is the anti-reflective treatment on the lens surfaces as it is essential for comfortable viewing in front of the monitor. The new anti-reflective coatings, in addition to allowing the lenses to be close to 100% transparent, are equipped with the following treatments: hardening in such a way as to resist scratches, anti-soiling and antistatic to remain cleaner over time. It is possible to combine a blue light filter, which protects the eye from the excess of this wavelength that all monitors emit.

  • Possibility of customization according to customer needs. The office lenses can be customized according to the customer’s needs and guarantee a field of vision of up to 90 cm, large viewing areas for computer work up to 1.20 cm deep and expansion of the fields of vision inside the lens for noticeably more relaxed vision up to about 5 meters.
